Root Canal Therapy

Root Canal Therapy by definition is a dental procedure in which the infected or damaged pulp of a tooth is removed and the chamber is sealed. It is a common belief that removing a tooth is a solution to the problem. However, the extraction of the tooth will ultimately be more costly and cause significant problems for adjacent teeth.

Family Dental Care removes the decay, cleans the canals and fills the resulting space with medicated dental cement to seal the tooth. A permanent restoration is needed after the root canal therapy to properly restore the tooth to full function. Symptoms may not present, but can include:

  • An abscess (or a pimple) on the gums
  • Sensitivity to heat
  • Severe toothache pain
  • Swelling and tenderness

What Does Root Canal Therapy Involve?

A root canal procedure requires one or more appointments and can be performed while the tooth is numb. We want to ensure that our patients won’t feel anything at all after they are numbed for the procedure. Decay will be removed from the tooth and an access opening made on top of the tooth. We then clean the canals and fill the resulting space with medicated dental cement to seal the tooth. After treatment, your tooth may still be sensitive for a short period of time, but this will subside as the inflammation diminishes and the tooth has healed. You will be given care instructions after your appointment. Good oral hygiene practices and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your root canal treatment.
