For many people, visiting the dentist can be so stressful that they put visits off for years, ignoring the need for routine care because of their anxiety.
Dental anxiety is common, but at Family Dental Care, Nicole Johnson and her team are dedicated to creating a calm, comfortable experience for every patient. With advanced technology, a compassionate team, and patient-centered care, dental visits become far less scary.
We Listen to Our Patients
Our patients often say that our team’s kindness and clear communication make a huge difference in how anxious they feel. We want you to feel informed and in control, so that what was once a stressful situation into a smooth, reassuring experience.
Here’s some things you can consider before and/or during your appointment.
- Tell Us About Your Anxiety. Let us know you feel anxious and we’ll take extra care in explaining each step, check in frequently to see how you’re feeling, and adjust treatment pacing if needed.
- Taking a break is okay. We are happy to accommodate short breaks! This gives control back to you.
- Ask as many questions as you want about procedures and pain control. Understanding what’s happening can reduce fear of the unknown.
Comfort and Relaxation Techniques
- Bring headphones to listen to music or an audiobook. This can shift focus away from the exam.
- Try a guided meditation app. Short mindfulness exercises can reduce tension before and during treatment.
- Do deep breathing exercises. Take slow, intentional breaths to help lower heart rate and stress.
- Explore progressive muscle relaxation. Tensing and releasing muscles can release physical tension.
- Use comfort items. Bring a stress ball, blanket, or even a small pillow for comfort. Whatever makes you feel less anxious is okay with us!
Sedation or Pain Management Options
- Topical numbing gels, local anesthetics can reduce physical discomfort.
- Nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) can help patients feel calm and relaxed without full sedation.
- Oral sedatives can be prescribed for particularly anxious patients to take before a visit.
Scheduling and Environment Choices
- Opt for an a.m. appointment: Morning appointments can prevent building anxiety all day.
- Break up your visits: Shorter visits might be an option that will make your experience feel less overwhelming.
- Stop in to meet us: We’re happy to meet with you before your appointment, and even give you a tour of the office to help reduce fear.
Cognitive Approaches
- Visualization: Imagine a relaxing scene or positive outcome while in the chair.
- Positive self-talk: Remind yourself that dental care is temporary discomfort with long-term benefits.
- Support person: Make arrangements with us to bring a trusted friend or family member with you to the appointment.
At Family Dental Care, Dr. Johnson and her staff aim to create an environment where every patient feels safe, heard, and comfortable. By combining clear communication, relaxation strategies, and modern dental technology, you can overcome anxiety and leave your appointment with a healthier, brighter smile.
